Reynolds Averaging

چکیده
It is neither feasible nor desirable to consider in detail all of the small-scale fluctuations that occur in the atmosphere. For this reason, we introduce averaging or smoothing operators, and attempt to describe only the average state of the atmosphere, following the approach of “Reynolds Averaging.” This leads, however, to additional terms in the governing equations for the averaged quantities. The additional terms represent the effects of “eddy fluxes” that arise from the scales of motion that have been removed the by the averaging procedure.

Multiresolution Flux Decomposition
Geophysical variables are orthogonally decomposed by averaging time series using diierent averaging lengths, referred to as a (Haar) multiresolution decomposition. This simple and economic decomposition is associated with cospectra which formally satisfy Reynolds averaging rules for each averaging length. The multiresolu-tion decomposition provides a natural estimate of the random error in esti...
متن کاملStatistical Dependence of Inertial Range Properties on Large Scales in a High-Reynolds-Number Shear Flow.
For turbulent velocity data measured in high-Reynolds-number atmospheric surface layer, we show that the observed dependence of the inertial range statistics on large scale fluctuations is a manifestation of the mixed averaging of regions of different local Reynolds number. This dependence can be subsumed by the Obukhov conditional averaging and the second refined similarity hypothesis of Kolmo...
متن کاملA note on third order structure functions in turbulence
Starting from the Navier-Stokes equation, we rigorously prove that a modi ed third order structure function ~ S 3 (r) asymptotically equals 4 r=3 ( is the dissipation rate) in the large Reynolds number limit of Navier-Stokes equation in an inertial regime. From this result, we rigorously con rm the Kolmogorov fourfth law, without the Kolmogorov assumption on isotropy. Our de nition of the struc...
متن کاملAssessment of Dual Plane PIV Measurements in Wall Turbulence Using DNS Data
Experimental dual plane particle image velocimetry (PIV) data are assessed using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of a similar flow with the aim of studying the effect of averaging within the interrogation window. The primary reason for the use of dual plane PIV is that the entire velocity gradient tensor and hence the full vorticity vector can be obtained. One limitation of PIV is the li...
متن کاملA consistent methodology for the derivation and calibration of a macroscopic turbulence model for flows in porous media
This work aims to model turbulent flows in media laden with solid structures according to porous media approach. A complete set of macroscopic transport equations is derived by spatially averaging the Reynolds averaged governing equations. A two-scale analysis highlights energy transfers between macroscopic and sub-filter kinetic energies (dispersive and turbulent kinetic energies). Additional ...
